About
Prof. Dr. Rıza Sonkaya

I was born in Samsun in 1981. I attended primary school in Samsun, secondary school at Amasya Anatolian High School and high school at Sivas Science High School. I began studying at Gülhane Military Medical Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2006.
I began my career as a flight physician at the 3rd Main Jet Base Command in Konya. Between 2010 and 2014, I completed my neurology residency at GATA Haydarpaşa Training Hospital. I subsequently worked as a neurologist at Erzurum Mareşal Çakmak Military Hospital, İstanbul Kasımpaşa Naval Hospital and Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital.
I became an associate professor in 2019 and a professor in 2025 at the University of Health Sciences, Gülhane Faculty of Medicine. I currently continue my clinical and academic work at Ankara Gülhane Training and Research Hospital.
My particular interests are Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. I provide diagnosis, treatment and follow-up in movement disorders, botulinum toxin and deep brain stimulation (DBS) clinics.
Medication has a fundamental role in managing neurological diseases. Selecting the appropriate medication requires careful consideration of its effectiveness, side effects and interactions. Reflecting my particular interest in this field, I have been pursuing a PhD in medical pharmacology since 2023. As part of my work bringing together clinical experience and pharmacological knowledge, the book Temel ve Klinik Nörofarmakoloji (Basic and Clinical Neuropharmacology), which I edited, was published in September 2026.
